Richard Killeen’s art reflects a deep engagement with themes of identity, culture and the natural environment. He does this in several ways.
Firstly he creates hybrid images that incorporate a wide range of references from different cultures, histories and contexts. These images convey a sense of ambiguity by blurring the borders between these forms.
Also, Killeen’s individual hybrid images disrupt the conventional linear narrative. This allows the viewer to consider the fluidity of meaning and construct their own stories.
Further, he creates a double layer of ambiguity by grouping many of these images together into a single work. Their juxtaposition also destabilises the possibility of a single reading.
Killeen’s dynamic compositions reflect the broader postmodern concerns with fragmentation, multiplicity and the instability of meaning.
