In 2022 Michael Moore-Jones wrote ‘Killeen is a cataloguer, the manager of an immense database of shapes and forms - the curator, perhaps, of an imaginary library. His works themselves are not just parts of that database, but dispersed remnants of Killeen’s own history.’
If Richard’s database is a library then the works in Banners are a selection of some of the stories he has to tell. Each banner is a collage of those familiar and iconic motifs, all of which have recurred throughout Richard’s practice, which spans over 50 years and many different media - the comb, the jar, the dragonfly (to name just a few). On the grouping of images in each work Richard says they are together ‘not because they relate to each other but because they are together, it’s like an essay in the right wrong thing’
