About Colin McCahon

Colin McCahon was born in Timaru in 1919. He studied at the Dunedin School of Art between 1937 and 1939, where he was taught by R N Field.

Colin McCahon met Peter McLeavey in 1965 through a mutual friend, M T Woollaston.

His first exhibition at the Peter McLeavey Gallery was in October 1968 — Peter’s second exhibition at the Cuba Street location. The exhibition was “The Northland Panels”, eight separate pieces of unstretched, unframed, hanging canvas, each one depicting a scene of rural Northland.

He then went on to exhibit regularly with the gallery, up in till the time of his passing in 1987.
