The Tribute paintings draw their inspiration from Tukutuku patterns, particularly the Poutama (Stairway to Heaven) design. Those named here were among the very first Māori to embrace Christianity and were involved in the bringing together of Māori and Pākehā that occurred through the gospel in the early 1800’s. Some were also important signatories of the Treaty of Waitangi.
